Description

These homemade Salisbury steaks are juicy and flavorful, smothered in a rich mushroom gravy. Perfect for a comforting dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. 1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
  2. 2. Shape the mixture into 4 oval patties (Salisbury steaks).
  3. 3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  4. 4. In the same skillet, add butter. Sauté sliced onion and mushrooms for 5-7 minutes until softened and browned.
  5. 5. Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and onions, stir and cook for 1 minute.
  6. 6. Gradually pour in beef broth while stirring constantly. Bring to a simmer, scraping up any browned bits from the pan.
  7. 7. Return the Salisbury steaks to the skillet. Cover and simmer on low for 10-15 minutes until cooked through.
  8. 8. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Serve hot.

Notes

For extra richness, add a splash of heavy cream to the gravy at the end. You can also substitute ground turkey for a lighter version.
