This comforting baked cabbage dish is smothered in a rich, creamy sauce and topped with crispy bacon. Perfect as a hearty side or a light main course.

- 1 large head green cabbage, cored and cut into wedges
- 6 slices bacon, chopped
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add cabbage wedges and blanch for 5 minutes. Drain well.
- In a skillet, cook bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon, leaving about 2 tablespoons of drippings.
- Add onion and garlic to the skillet; sauté until softened, about 3 minutes.
- Stir in heavy cream, chicken broth, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Bring to a simmer.
- Gradually whisk in cheddar and Parmesan until melted and smooth.
- Place cabbage wedges in the prepared dish. Pour cream sauce over the top.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, until bubbly and edges are golden.
- Sprinkle with crispy bacon and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
For a lighter version, substitute half-and-half for the heavy cream. The cabbage can be cut into smaller pieces if preferred. This dish reheats well.
