Description
A classic Philly cheesesteak made with thinly sliced ribeye, melty provolone, and sweet caramelized onions on a toasted hoagie roll.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 1/2 pounds ribeye steak, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 4 hoagie rolls, split
- 8 slices provolone cheese
Instructions
- Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions, sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until deeply caramelized, about 20 minutes. Transfer to a bowl.
- In the same skillet, heat oil over high heat. Add steak slices in a single layer and cook without stirring until browned, about 2 minutes. Flip and cook another minute. Season with salt and pepper.
- Divide steak among the rolls. Top each with caramelized onions and 2 slices provolone. Place under broiler until cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve immediately.
Notes
For authentic flavor, use ribeye and slice it as thin as possible (partially freezing helps). Provolone is traditional, but Cheez Whiz is also classic.
