Ingredients

Scale

For the Crust:

  • For the Tots:
  • 1 (32 oz) bag frozen tater tots
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • For the Beef:
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For the Cheese Sauce:
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • For Toppings:
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1 tomato, diced
  • 1/4 cup diced pickles
  • 1/4 cup diced red onion
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup mustard
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. 1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. 2. In a large bowl, toss tater tots with olive oil, garlic powder, and onion powder until evenly coated. Spread in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. 3. Bake for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden and crispy.
  4. 4. While tots bake, cook beef: In a skillet over medium heat, brown ground beef with onion and garlic until no pink remains (5-7 minutes). Drain excess fat.
  5. 5. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, paprika, mustard powder, salt, and pepper. Reduce heat to low and keep warm.
  6. 6. Make cheese sauce: Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Simmer for 2-3 minutes until thickened.
  7. 7. Remove from heat and stir in cheddar cheese until melted. Add cayenne if using.
  8. 8. Assemble: Arrange crispy tots on a platter. Top with beef mixture, drizzle with cheese sauce, then add lettuce, tomato, pickles, and red onion.
  9. 9. Serve immediately with ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise on the side.

Notes

For extra crispiness, bake tots on a wire rack set over the baking sheet. Substitute ground turkey for a lighter option. Leftover cheese sauce can be refrigerated for 3 days (reheat with a splash of milk).
