- For the Filling:
- 5 cups peeled and diced apples (I used Granny Smith)
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground all-spice
- 3/4 cup Salted Caramel Sauce (can use store bought)
- For the Crust & Topping:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- For Serving:
- Vanilla ice cream and extra salted caramel sauce, optional
Instructions
- Filling:
- Step 1: Peel and dice the apples into small pieces.
- Step 2: Toss diced apples with fresh lemon juice to prevent browning.
- Step 3: In a separate bowl, combine all-purpose flour, cornstarch, granulated sugar, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and all-spice.
- Step 4: Mix the dry ingredients with the apples until well combined.
- Step 5: Stir in salted caramel sauce to the apple mixture and set aside.
- Crust & Topping:
- Step 1: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Step 2: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.
- Step 3: Cut in cold unsalted butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Step 4: Stir in beaten egg and vanilla extract until just combined.
- Step 5: Press half of the dough into the bottom of a greased or parchment-lined baking pan.
- Step 6: Spread the apple filling evenly over the crust.
- Step 7: Crumble the remaining dough over the top of the apples.
- Step 8: Bake for about 45-50 minutes or until the topping is golden and apples are tender.
- Serving:
- Step 1: Allow bars to cool completely in the pan before slicing.
- Step 2: Serve bars topped with vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of extra salted caramel sauce if desired.
