Irresistible Baklava

For the Crust:

  • 1 package phyllo dough (16 oz)
  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, melted
  • 4 cups mixed nuts (walnuts, pistachios, almonds), finely chopped
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Mix chopped nuts with cinnamon and cloves in a bowl.
  3. Layer 8 sheets of phyllo dough in the dish, brushing each with melted butter.
  4. Sprinkle 1/3 of the nut mixture over the phyllo.
  5. Repeat layering phyllo and nuts twice more, ending with a top layer of 8 phyllo sheets.
  6. Cut baklava into diamond or square shapes before baking.
  7. Bake for 50 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. While baking, make syrup by boiling sugar, water, honey, vanilla, and lemon juice for 10 minutes. Let cool slightly.
  9. Pour syrup over hot baklava immediately after removing from oven. Let soak for several hours before serving.

You can customize the seasonings to taste.
