- For the frosting:
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- In a large bowl, cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the applesauce and vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cake to cool completely on a wire rack.
- For the frosting: In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar and cinnamon, beating until creamy.
- Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Spread the frosting evenly over the cooled cake.
Notes
This cake is best served chilled and can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. For a healthier version, use whole wheat flour.
